Throughout the Holy Land, the Church offers a wide range of social
services, especially for the aged and the handicapped. 13 specialized
homes and educational facilities are run for dependent children and also
9 centres for the disabled. There are also 8 homes for the elderly
throughout the land.
Among the 13 specialized schools and homes for dependent children, 8 are in Palestine, 1 in Israel, and 4 in Jordan.
In Palestine:
- The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul run two homes for dependent children, one in Bethany and one in Bethlehem.
- The Sisters of Saint Elizabeth also run two institutions called “Home of Peace” for dependent children, one in East-Jerusalem, on the Mount of Olives, and another one in Bethlehem.
- In Beit Sahour, the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist founded the Holy Child Program for children that have suffered trauma.
- The Missionaries of Charity run a home for handicapped children and the aged in Nablus.
-The Sisters of the Institute of the Incarnate Word run a home for handicapped children in Bethlehem.
-The Brothers of the Institute of the Incarnate Word run a home for dependent children in Gaza.
In Israel:
- The Daughters of St. Anne run a home for dependent children in Sepphoris, near Nazareth.
In Jordan:
- The Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary run a specialized school and home for dependent children in Amman.
- The Institute of the Incarnated Word run a home for dependent boys in Anjara.
- The Sisters of the Institute of the Incarnated Word run “Our Lady of the Mountain” for dependent girls in Anjara.
- The Missionaries of Charity run a house for handicapped children in Rusaifah.
Among the 9 centres for the disabled, 4 are in Israel, 3 in Palestine and 2 in Jordan.
In Israel:
- 3 centres are run by the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul: in Ein Karem, in Haïfa and in Nazareth there is a centre for the re-education of the deaf and the mute.
- a centre is run by the Servants of Charity (Don Guanella) in Nazareth: “the Holy Family Centre”.
In Palestine:
- In Gaza, there is a centre for the disabled run by the Missionaries of Charity: the “Home of Peace”.
- In Bethlehem, the “Ephpheta Institute” is run by the Teaching Sisters of Saint Dorothy. It is noteworthy that this institute was also a fruit of the visit of Pope Paul VI.
- In Bethlehem the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy serve at the Bethlehem Arab Society for Rehabilitation.
In Jordan:
- The Latin Patriarchal Vicariate in Amman runs Our Lady of Peace Centre for children with special needs in Marj Al-Hamam with physiotherapy units in Aqaba and Mafraq.
- The Sermig community runs the Meeting Point Arsenal for those with special needs in Madaba.
Among the 8 homes for the elderly, representing the Church’s action for the elderly, many of whom are poor, 2 are located in Jordan, 3 in Israel (2 in Galilee and one in West-Jerusalem) and 3 in Palestine.

- The “Home for the Poor and Dying” in Amman, run by the Missionaries of Charity.
-The “Home for Human Care” in Fuheis, run by the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Cross of Lebanon.
In Israel:
-The “House for the Elderly” in Isfia (Mount Carmel), run by the Greek Catholic Church.
- The “Home for the Elderly” in Nazareth, run by the Daughters of Saint Anne.
-The “Saint Vincent Hospice” in West-Jerusalem, run by the Daughters of Charity of of Saint Vincent de Paul.
In Palestine:
-The “Hospice for the Elderly” in Bethany, run by the Daughters of Our Lady of Sorrows.
- The “Home for the Elderly” in Qubeibeh (Emmaus), run by the Sisters of the Divine Saviour (Salvatorian Sisters)
-The “Efrem Home for the Elderly” in Taybeh, attached to the Latin parish and run by the Community of the Children of Mary.
