GALILEE – Nazareth observed on 7 November the 10th anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and on 14 November the city held a special ceremony in honour of former mayor Ramez Jarayseh.
Commemoration of Yasser Arafat (Abu Ammar)
In Palestine, in Israel’s Arab sector, and in Arab countries, the
memory of Yasser Arafat, who died in Paris on 11 November 2004, was
widely observed.
In Nazareth the event was jointly organized by Foundation Yasser
Arafat, Foundation Tawfiq Zayyad and Foundation Mahmoud Darwish ,
including two distinctive moments :
Exhibition of photographs , showing the most important steps in the
life of Abou Ammar ; a striking photo was the one showing Abu Ammar
lighting together with Patriarch Michel Sabbah a candlestick in
Bethlehem ;
Various speeches and videos on the Palestinian leader’s life.
A social evening of appreciation to former Mayor Ramez Jarayseh
It was held on 14 November at the auditorium of the Sisters of St
Joseph. Among the attendants : political and civilian figures from the
Arab sector in Israel and Palestine , mayors, Knesset members, public
dignitaries, religious leaders, and his larger family members
The programme included a documentary covering four terms of services stretching over a 20 year period, as well as speeches
Emphasis was put on the distinctive qualities of Ramez Jarayseh :
straightforwardness, honesty, humility, enlightened and candid
patriotism
Among the gifts offered to hinm : two paintings, by Nazareth-born
painters Cecile Qahly and Areej Lawen, illustrating Ramez as an inspired
figure, and his term of service as a shining one ; as well as a pen, a
stimulant for Ramez to put down his memoirs on paper.
